Google Fi Introduces ‘Number Lock’ to Combat SIM Swaps

Google Fi Wireless has launched a new feature, ‘Number Lock,’ aimed at providing an additional layer of protection against illegal SIM swaps. This new security measure prevents users from transferring their phone numbers to a new device or carrier while the lock is active.

To enable Number Lock, users should visit the Google Fi website (fi.google.com/account). After selecting their user profile (especially for those on group plans), they need to navigate to Phone settings > Privacy & security > Number lock. Users must then tap “Sign in to manage Number lock” and confirm their Google Account credentials to activate the toggle.

If users need to transfer their number to a new device or port it to another carrier in the future, they can simply return to the same settings page to disable Number Lock. It’s important to note that this feature is not accessible via the Android or iOS apps, but the minimal inconvenience makes enabling Number Lock a prudent choice for most users.

Apart from the new Number Lock feature, Google Fi already employs robust protections for transferring numbers, such as Google Account security and two-factor authentication, which require users to sign in and authenticate their identity. However, the vulnerability lies in the T-Mobile backend, which was compromised last year. To enhance security, users are also advised to disable SMS-based two-factor authentication whenever possible.
