Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is set to introduce new chat and call features for teenagers using its Quest VR headsets by the end of this year. This move comes as part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to provide age-appropriate content while maintaining robust parental controls.
The new capabilities will allow teenagers to interact with approved contacts through chat, calls, and invitations to join Mixed Reality (MR) experiences. However, these features will only be accessible with parental consent. Parents will have the ability to manage and approve contacts by adding them via the “Following” or “Followers” lists on their child’s account.
Meta emphasized that parental supervision remains paramount. “Parents will soon be able to add personally approved contacts for their teenagers, enabling them to safely communicate and participate in MR VR experiences,” a Meta spokesperson explained. This approach ensures that interactions are monitored and controlled according to parental preferences.
Furthermore, Meta ensures that parents retain full control over their child’s contacts. They can remove contacts at any time, regardless of whether they were initially added from the “Following” or “Followers” lists.
By integrating these enhanced features, Meta aims to enrich the VR experience for younger users while maintaining a secure and controlled environment. These updates reflect Meta’s commitment to balancing innovation with safety in its VR offerings.
