July 24, 2024 — In a strategic move to address the escalating demands of artificial intelligence (AI), Microsoft has announced a new partnership with telecommunications giant Lumen Technologies. This collaboration is poised to bolster Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure and expand its network capabilities.
The partnership, unveiled today, will see Lumen leveraging Microsoft’s cloud solutions to accelerate its digital transformation initiatives. Conversely, Microsoft will utilize Lumen’s extensive network infrastructure to meet the surging demand on its data centers driven by AI advancements.
“AI is fundamentally reshaping our daily lives and transforming business operations,” said Erin Chapple, Corporate Vice President of Azure Core Product and Design at Microsoft. “Our focus is on both current and future impacts of AI, ensuring our network infrastructure supports this evolution.”
Chapple emphasized that Lumen’s robust network and digital capabilities are crucial for Azure to deliver a reliable and scalable platform. Lumen, in return, plans to migrate its workloads to Microsoft Azure, employ Microsoft Entra solutions for enhanced security, and collaborate on telecom-specific innovations.
This shift is expected to yield significant financial benefits for Lumen, with projections indicating an improvement in cash flow exceeding $20 million over the next year. Additionally, it promises to enhance customer experience and streamline Lumen’s technology portfolio by phasing out outdated systems.

According to recent reports by PYMNTS, the tech titan is developing SpreadsheetLLM, an AI-powered tool designed to transform how businesses utilize spreadsheets. This new tool, currently in the testing phase, leverages large language models (LLMs) to potentially convert Excel from a static spreadsheet into a dynamic, interactive platform.
Rogers Jeffrey Leo John, Co-founder and CTO of DataChat, a no-code, generative AI platform, noted the complexity of integrating LLMs with spreadsheets. “The challenge lies in the unique cell-based structure of spreadsheets, which differs from the linear data models typically used for LLM training,” John explained.
