Google Expands Wildfire Boundary Tracker to Kenya and 16 Other Nations

Google has announced the extension of its AI-driven Wildfire Boundary Tracker to Kenya and 16 additional countries, enhancing global preparedness and response to the escalating threat of wildfires.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Google highlighted the capabilities of the tool, designed to provide communities with precise and current information on wildfire boundaries through Google Search and Maps.

“This tool offers accurate and real-time updates on wildfire boundaries,” the communiqué stated, emphasizing the integration of advanced AI technology. The wildfire tracking model utilizes satellite imagery and other data sources to deliver precise and dependable information on wildfire progression.

This expansion occurs amidst a global increase in wildfires, significantly impacting nations in Europe and Africa.

Yossi Matias, Vice President and Head of Google Research, reiterated Google’s dedication to leveraging technology for safeguarding humanity during natural disasters.

“By broadening the reach of our wildfire boundary tracker, we aim to empower communities with the critical information needed to protect themselves and their loved ones,” she stated.

Google’s wildfire boundary tracker not only sends informative alerts to individuals in affected regions but also provides essential safety tips and guidance. To accommodate diverse populations, the tool supports multiple languages. It is designed to complement existing emergency response efforts, adding an extra layer of protection for vulnerable communities.

A report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) predicts that wildfires will become more frequent, intense, and prolonged as global temperatures rise due to human activities, such as fossil fuel combustion.

The report highlights that in Kenya alone, fires have caused a 0.60 percent loss in tree cover from 2001 to 2023. According to Global Forest Watch, 341 high-confidence fire alerts have already been reported in Kenya in 2024.

The countries benefiting from this expansion include Andorra, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Kenya, Monaco, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Portugal, Rwanda, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey.
