CachyOS, a performance-optimized Arch Linux-based distribution, has unveiled its latest “August 2024” rolling release update, marking a significant evolution in its offerings.
In this new release, CachyOS now incorporates open-source NVIDIA kernel modules within its NVIDIA driver stack, enhancing compatibility and performance where supported. Additionally, users can access the NVIDIA R560 beta driver, providing cutting-edge graphics support. Another notable addition is the COSMIC Desktop Environment, developed by System76. The COSMIC desktop, written in Rust, can be installed using the alpha packages available via the command sudo pacman -S cosmic-session.
The update also brings several improvements to CachyOS’s kernel management, including a streamlined script for Secure Boot handling. Enhancements in hardware detection have been made, and the update introduces support for the ASUS ROG Ally X through the CachyOS Handheld Edition. These changes are aimed at providing users with a more versatile and user-friendly experience.
