Meta is set to unveil a more budget-friendly version of its recent mixed reality headset, the Meta Quest 3. The anticipated model, tentatively named Quest 3S, could be announced at the Meta Connect event on September 25 and 26.
Originally launched in June of the previous year, the Meta Quest 3 generated speculation about a Lite variant. According to Bloomberg, Meta is considering reducing the Quest 3’s price by offering the controllers separately. However, the combined cost of the headset and separate controllers could approach the price of the Quest 3. The Quest 3S may include controllers, but they could be different from those bundled with the original Quest 3.
Bloomberg also reports that Meta might debut AR glasses called Orion, designed to be akin to the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
In a significant shift, Meta has reportedly halted development on a mixed reality headset intended to rival Apple’s Vision Pro, as revealed by The Information. The project, internally dubbed La Jolla and scheduled for a 2027 release, was set to feature micro OLED displays similar to those in the Vision Pro. Following a recent product review, Meta has instructed its Reality Labs team to cease work on the device. This decision may be a response to the Vision Pro’s lackluster market reception.
Meanwhile, Apple is focusing on a new, more affordable headset aimed at the premium iPhone market.
The Information further reports that Meta discontinued the Quest Pro in 2023 due to negative reviews and disappointing sales. Despite this, the company is pressing ahead with the development of the Quest 4, the successor to the Quest 3, which is expected to launch in 2026.
