MNT Research has announced the “Reform Next,” a major upgrade to its original open-source, moddable laptop. The new design features a thinner profile, enhanced hardware, and a more powerful processor, making it a practical option for modern computing needs.
The original MNT Reform gained attention as a fully open-source laptop with both hardware and software, but its bulky design and slow performance were significant drawbacks. MNT has steadily worked on improving the device and its compact version, the Pocket Reform, since its debut two-and-a-half years ago. The most notable upgrade is the Rockchip RK3588 processor, featuring four ARM Cortex-A76 cores and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores, paired with either 16GB or 32GB of RAM. While it’s not a high-end performer, these improvements provide sufficient power for everyday tasks like web browsing and productivity apps.
The Reform Next introduces several design enhancements, starting with a smaller, sleeker form factor and a more conventional glass trackpad, replacing the original trackball. The laptop’s slimmer design is achieved by splitting the motherboard into multiple smaller boards that are easier to replace, along with custom-designed battery packs that integrate electronics more tightly into the chassis. The motherboard features a CPU module and three “port boards” for added connectivity.
As with its predecessor, the Reform Next uses user-replaceable LiFePO4 batteries, though users can opt for Li-ion batteries, trading longer battery life for slightly lower safety and environmental sustainability.
Additional features include HDMI and USB-C ports, a mechanical keyboard, and four PCIe lanes for M.2 storage. Charging is also conveniently done via USB-C.
The Reform Next is currently in its prototype stage, and MNT is seeking support through the Crowd Supply crowdfunding platform before launching wider availability. While pricing details remain undisclosed, MNT plans to release more information later this week for those interested in an entirely open-source laptop.
