Microsoft Unveils New Windows App for Seamless Access to Windows Applications

Microsoft has officially launched a new application called Windows App, designed to enable users to run Windows and Windows applications across multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and web browsers. Currently in public preview for Android, this app replaces the Microsoft Remote Desktop on macOS, iOS, and Android devices.

The Windows App aims to streamline the user experience by providing a unified access point to various Windows environments, such as personal PCs with Remote Desktop enabled, cloud-hosted Windows 365, and Microsoft Dev Box systems. It also allows access to individually hosted applications provisioned by organizations for work or educational purposes.

“This unified app serves as your secure gateway to connect to Windows across Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop, Remote Desktop Services, Microsoft Dev Box, and more,” stated Hilary Braun, Senior Product Manager for Windows 365.

The introduction of the Windows App brings several enhancements over its predecessor. These include easier account switching, improved device management for IT administrators, support for Windows 365 specifically tailored for frontline workers, and compatibility with Microsoft’s “Relayed RDP Shortpath,” facilitating Remote Desktop access even in restrictive network environments.

On macOS, iOS, and Android, the Windows App will fully replace the Remote Desktop Connection app. Existing users will receive an automatic update to transition to the new app. However, on Windows, the Remote Desktop Connection app will still be available, as the Windows App is focused on Microsoft’s cloud and remote services and requires user account sign-in.

The Windows App retains most features familiar to users of the Remote Desktop Connection, such as multi-monitor support, device redirection for peripherals like webcams and audio inputs, and dynamic resolution capabilities that adjust the Windows desktop size according to the app window.

With this launch, Microsoft aims to enhance accessibility and streamline workflows for users relying on Windows applications across diverse devices and platforms.
