EU Set to Vote on Tariffs for Chinese-Made Electric Vehicles

The European Union is scheduled to vote on October 4 regarding the potential implementation of tariffs reaching up to 45% on electric vehicles imported from China, according to sources familiar with the situation.

A draft of the proposed regulation has been circulated among member states, although the timeline for the vote remains subject to change due to ongoing negotiations with Beijing aimed at finding a resolution to avoid the tariffs.

The European Commission has yet to respond to requests for comment from Reuters. Currently, the commission is considering final tariffs of up to 35.3% on Chinese-made electric vehicles, in addition to the standard 10% import duty on cars.

The proposed tariffs will require approval from the EU’s 27 member states. If passed, the measures could be enacted by the end of October unless a qualified majority—15 member states representing 65% of the EU population—votes against them.
