Microsoft announced on Monday that Sebastien Bubeck, its Vice President of Generative AI research, is leaving the tech giant to join OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. The specific role Bubeck will take on at the Microsoft-backed AI firm remains undisclosed.
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed Bubeck’s decision, stating, “Sebastian has decided to leave Microsoft to further his work toward developing AGI.” The spokesperson expressed optimism about maintaining a collaborative relationship with Bubeck through his future endeavors at OpenAI.
Bubeck did not respond immediately to a request for confirmation from Reuters. Reports indicate that most of his coauthors on a research paper concerning Microsoft’s Phi LLMs—models designed to be smaller than traditional large language models—are still with Microsoft and plan to continue advancing these technologies.
Bubeck’s departure comes amid a wave of changes at OpenAI, which has seen significant personnel shifts, including the exit of longtime Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati in September. Despite speculation, CEO Sam Altman has denied any connection between these departures and a potential restructuring of the organization.
