An unconventional online debate on Thursday showcased an artificial intelligence representation of incumbent Congressman Don Beyer, stirring discussions about the use of AI in electoral politics. The event featured two independent challengers, Bentley Hensel and David Kennedy, as they engaged with Beyer’s AI likeness—dubbed “DonBot”—despite the congressman’s absence.
Streamed on platforms like YouTube and Rumble, the debate struggled to attract viewers, with attendance peaking at fewer than 20. Hensel, who created the AI version of Beyer, aimed for a realistic portrayal by using publicly available information to inform the AI’s responses. However, technical glitches marred the event, including moments where DonBot’s robotic voice was inaudible.
The debate covered key issues, including gun control, U.S. aid to Israel, and healthcare access. When asked why voters should reelect Beyer, DonBot stated, “My answer is simple: I believe that I can make a real difference in the lives of the people of Virginia’s 8th district.” On the contentious topic of aid to Israel, the AI indicated it would oppose withholding military support as a condition for establishing a Palestinian state, aligning with Beyer’s previous votes against additional aid, citing Israel’s financial capacity.
Beyer, who secured nearly 75% of the vote in 2022, is anticipated to win re-election comfortably. His office did not respond to requests for comment after business hours.
While the event raised eyebrows for its novelty, experts suggest that the integration of AI into political debates may become more common, especially if regulatory measures surrounding its use remain insufficient.
