Qualcomm Upgrades Mobile Chips for AI, Partners with Samsung and Others

Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM.O) announced on Monday a significant enhancement to its mobile phone chips, incorporating technology originally developed for its laptop processors to boost performance for generative AI applications.

As the largest supplier of mobile phone chips globally, Qualcomm has been strategically diversifying its product offerings. In 2021, the company recruited a team of former Apple engineers to assist in designing laptop chips, which launched earlier this year and now power AI capabilities in Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

This technology, branded as “Oryon,” is making its debut in Qualcomm’s mobile chip lineup. The Snapdragon 8 Elite, the latest iteration of the company’s mobile chip, has been redesigned to efficiently handle tasks such as image and text generation. Additionally, Qualcomm plans to provide software developers with exclusive tools that extend beyond the existing capabilities of Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) Android operating system, enhancing developers’ ability to utilize these advanced chip features.

“AI is an area where Google is advancing rapidly, but we have our own technology to offer developers,” stated Chris Patrick, Qualcomm’s senior vice president and general manager for mobile handsets, in an interview with Reuters.

Qualcomm has confirmed partnerships with prominent manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics (005930.KS), Asustek Computer (2357.TW), and Xiaomi (1810.HK), who will incorporate the new Snapdragon chip into their upcoming devices.
