OpenAI has confirmed it will not release an API for its video generation model, Sora, at this time due to capacity limitations. Romain Huet, head of developer experience, explained during an AMA that the decision was made after overwhelming demand led to the suspension of new applications for Sora. CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the miscalculation, stating, “We significantly underestimated demand for Sora. It’s going to take a while to get everyone access.”
While OpenAI has resumed sign-ups for Sora, the lack of an API could create challenges as competition heats up. Google, for example, launched an API for its video model, Veo, in December, and plans to release an API for Veo 2 in 2025. AWS has also introduced an API for its video model, Nova Reel, while startups like Runway are already providing APIs for video generation at scale.
As OpenAI grapples with demand for Sora, the competitive landscape in AI video generation is intensifying. With rival companies expanding their offerings, OpenAI may need to adjust its strategy to keep pace. The growing interest in generative video technology highlights the need for scalable solutions in the creative sector.
