Microsoft has become the largest buyer of NVIDIA’s Hopper AI chips in 2024, securing nearly 500,000 units—double the amount of its nearest competitor, according to Economic Daily News and Financial Times. This significant purchase highlights the growing demand for AI servers and boosts Taiwanese manufacturers like Foxconn, Quanta, and Wiwynn.
While Microsoft’s stockpile of Hopper chips positions it well in the race for next-gen AI systems, challenges remain. MarketWatch reports that Microsoft’s primary concern is not chip availability, but the electricity needed to power the AI infrastructure. CEO Satya Nadella confirmed that the company has met its chip needs following an aggressive acquisition strategy since the ChatGPT-driven AI boom in 2022.
Meanwhile, a Commercial Times report suggests that Microsoft may scale back orders due to technical issues with NVIDIA’s next-gen GB200 chips. This shift could impact the broader chip supply landscape, particularly in Taiwan’s manufacturing sector.
