Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has sharply criticized Elon Musk, describing him as “clearly a bully” in a recent interview. The two co-founded OpenAI but have since become embroiled in a bitter feud.
In the interview with The Free Press, Altman said Musk’s public disputes with OpenAI were a “sideshow” and attributed much of his animosity to OpenAI’s recent success and Musk’s own AI venture, xAI. Musk filed a lawsuit in August, claiming he was “deceived” into starting OpenAI and seeking to block its transition to a for-profit model. However, emails released by OpenAI suggested Musk had previously supported the idea of a for-profit structure.
Altman acknowledged Musk’s early contributions to OpenAI but criticized his aggressive, combative nature. “He’s also someone who clearly likes to get into fights,” Altman added, citing Musk’s rivalries with other tech figures like Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates.
Despite their differences, Altman suggested Musk would have supported OpenAI’s current direction if he had stayed. Musk’s growing political influence was also discussed, with Altman downplaying concerns that Musk would abuse his power to target rivals.
Both OpenAI and Musk did not respond to requests for comment.
