Apple is reportedly planning to integrate Google’s Gemini AI alongside OpenAI‘s ChatGPT in the upcoming iOS 18 release, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. During the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 keynote, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to bring the ChatGPT artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to the iPhone’s operating system. Although Google’s AI model was not mentioned at the event, Apple later confirmed that it is considering the integration of multiple third-party AI models.
Apple Explores Google Gemini AI Integration
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman emphasized that Apple is not negotiating with Meta to bring Llama 3 to iOS 18, despite earlier reports. Instead, the tech giant is focused on incorporating Google Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude AI into its smartphones.
The report suggests that if the integration timeline aligns, Apple could potentially offer both Gemini and ChatGPT when Apple Intelligence is fully deployed. However, previous reports indicate that some AI features might be delayed until late 2024 or early 2025. These delayed features include AI enhancements in the Mail app and Swift Assist for Xcode, expected by the end of the year, while most of Siri’s AI capabilities are anticipated to be available in 2025.
AI Features Rolling Out Gradually
While Gurman reports that Gemini might be available alongside ChatGPT, Apple has confirmed its pursuit of third-party AI model integrations immediately following WWDC 2024. In a post-WWDC conversation with YouTuber iJustine, Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, mentioned the company’s exploration of partnerships with Google and Anthropic.
Apple Intelligence, a suite of on-device and cloud-based features, will be accessible across apps and interfaces on iPhones, iPads, and Mac devices with the new OS update.
