When booking a flight, the ultimate goal is often to secure the best deal, particularly now, as flights from U.S. airports have become more expensive than in previous years. With numerous tools available, such as flight price trackers and low-fare calendars, travelers have various options to find affordable airfare. Recently, AI-powered features have been introduced by travel search engines like Booking.com, Expedia, and Skyscanner, enhancing their capabilities in helping customers plan their vacations.
These AI trip planners, functioning similarly to chatbots, assist travelers in various aspects of their trip planning. They can help find accommodations, suggest destinations, and even build itineraries. Moreover, some of these AI tools may also assist in finding cheap flights.
Skyscanner’s Savvy Search tool, launched in May, is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This tool accesses a vast database of over 18 million flight routes and 80 billion daily price searches to offer the best travel recommendations. On the other hand, Google’s AI tool, Gemini, is described as a “creative and productivity tool” that assists travelers with trip planning. According to a Google spokesperson, Gemini connects to and accesses relevant information from various Google tools, including Google Flights, Google Hotels, Google Maps, and Docs, enabling users to check flights, hotels, and driving directions in one conversation.
To evaluate the effectiveness of these AI tools, I tested Skyscanner’s AI Trip Planner and Google’s Gemini to see if they could find the most affordable round-trip flights for a trip from Honolulu to New York for the week of August 18-25. For reference, a search on Google Flights on Thursday afternoon showed the cheapest flight was a $761 round-trip ticket on United Airlines in its basic economy cabin.
