Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal Calls for Enhanced Data Security Amid Global Microsoft Outage

In the wake of the global Microsoft outage, which disrupted services worldwide, Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has underscored the critical need for robust data security measures. Addressing the incident, Aggarwal stressed the importance of safeguarding data, particularly in the context of its geographical storage.

“Outages, while momentary and often unintentional, highlight vulnerabilities that could also be exploited by malicious actors,” Aggarwal stated. “Given that 80% of our data is stored outside India, we are left with limited control over these risks.”

Aggarwal further emphasized the necessity for stricter data localization regulations to mitigate such risks. “The government must acknowledge the risks associated with global data storage and implement more stringent data localization norms to address these challenges,” he asserted.

The Microsoft outage, which has impacted various sectors including global airports, has been attributed to a third-party software update. Microsoft confirmed the issue, stating, “We are aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update from a third-party software platform. We anticipate a resolution is forthcoming.”

In addition, a Microsoft spokesperson provided further details, noting, “We are aware of the issue affecting a subset of customers. We understand the impact on our users and are working diligently to restore services as quickly as possible for those still experiencing disruptions.”
