According to the latest data from Statcounter released on August 5, Microsoft’s Edge browser has achieved a new milestone, capturing 13.74% of the desktop market share in July. This marks an increase of 0.39 percentage points from the previous month and a significant leap from its 10.76% share a year ago.
In contrast, Google Chrome continues to dominate the browser landscape with a commanding 64.72% market share, reflecting a modest increase of 0.03 percentage points. Apple’s Safari maintains its position as the third most popular browser, holding 9.1% of the market, a gain of 0.07 percentage points from the prior month. Safari’s growth underscores its strong foothold as the exclusive browser for macOS.
Mozilla Firefox ranks fourth, with a 6.64% market share, up by 0.09 percentage points. The upcoming deprecation of Chrome’s Manifest V2 extension, which may reduce the functionality of certain extensions, including ad blockers, could potentially drive more users toward Firefox, which has announced no plans to phase out Manifest V2.
Opera, meanwhile, has seen a decrease, with its market share falling to 2.91%, down by 0.45 percentage points.
In related news, Statcounter also highlighted that Windows 11 has surpassed a 30% market share for the first time since its launch, marking a notable achievement in the desktop operating system sector.
As of early August, the desktop browser market shares are as follows:
- Google Chrome: 64.72% (+0.03)
- Microsoft Edge: 13.74% (+0.39)
