Revitalizing Traditions: AI Infuses Innovation into Established Trends at CES Expo

The annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is making a strong comeback after the pandemic, featuring a prominent role for artificial intelligence (AI) across a diverse range of products, from bicycles to baby bottles.

Scheduled to officially kick off in Las Vegas on Tuesday, CES anticipates hosting over 3,500 exhibitors and drawing around 130,000 visitors. The event’s exhibitor and attendee numbers have steadily increased since the online-only format in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite initial uncertainties post-pandemic, smaller companies without significant brand recognition are recognizing the value of participating in CES to gain attention. In addition to startups, major brands such as Amazon, Google, Intel, Netflix, Samsung, Sony, and TikTok are expected to be present, according to the Consumer Technology Association.

AI takes the spotlight at CES, with analysts dubbing it the “year of AI” in terms of product presentations. The technology has evolved significantly since the previous CES, with models underlying AI showing notable improvements. These advancements are being applied in practical ways for consumers, making AI a central focus at the event.

Innovations at CES include tech-packed glasses for the visually impaired by Lumen, providing wearers with information on safe walking paths. Shift Robotics will showcase Moonwalkers shoes, allowing users to walk at a running pace without sweating. AI integration extends to various areas such as homes, sound systems, automobiles, televisions, baby products, and more.

While CES emphasizes AI-driven solutions, there is caution against AI-washing, akin to greenwashing seen in previous years. Not all products may live up to their AI promises.

The event will also showcase eye-catching televisions from companies like LG and unveil automotive innovations, highlighting the transformation of cars into rolling software platforms. Chipmakers, including Intel, will present their latest semiconductors designed for complex computing tasks. Nvidia, a key player in AI technology, will deliver a special address on consumer technologies and robotics.

Health-related themes are expected to feature prominently, with sensors embedded in mirrors, wearables, and other devices measuring vital signs. Keynote speakers at CES include L’Oreal CEO Nicolas Hieronimus and Snap co-founder and chief Evan Spiegel, discussing topics such as brand loyalty.

Sustainability emerges as a significant trend at CES, with companies adopting environmentally friendly practices in packaging, using recycled materials, and incorporating rechargeable batteries into their products. Analysts note that sustainability efforts at CES are becoming more substantial and meaningful than in previous years.
