Eric Schmidt Apologizes for Remote Work Critique, Cites Impact on Google’s AI Progress

Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google, issued an apology for his recent remarks attributing Google’s perceived lag in artificial intelligence advancements to the company’s remote work policies. Schmidt’s comments, made during a lecture at Stanford University, stirred significant controversy and led to the removal of the lecture video from the university’s official YouTube channel on August 15, despite amassing over 40,000 views in a single day.

In his original speech, Schmidt asserted, “Google prioritized work-life balance, early departures, and remote work over the imperative of winning.” He continued, “If you leave university to start a company, you won’t let people work from home and come in just once a week if you aim to compete with other startups.” Schmidt suggested that AI startups like OpenAI and Anthropic have outpaced Google due to their intense work culture.

Following the backlash, Schmidt clarified his position to The Wall Street Journal, acknowledging that his comments were poorly phrased and expressing regret for the misunderstanding.

In addition to his critique of remote work, Schmidt discussed broader challenges facing the AI sector, including copyright issues. He criticized how some companies might engage in illegal practices and then address the legal consequences later. Using TikTok as an example, Schmidt hypothesized that if the app were banned, students could quickly replicate it using AI, thereby capturing its users and content, and launch a new app almost instantaneously. Schmidt emphasized that while he did not advocate theft, he noted that business owners could potentially manage legal issues if their ventures succeeded or ignore them if they did not.

Schmidt, who served as Google’s chairman and CEO until 2015, remains an influential figure in Silicon Valley. He has invested in AI ventures such as Mistral AI and continues to be an active player in the technology industry.
