Meta Puts GTA San Andreas VR Port “On Hold Indefinitely”

Meta has announced that the highly anticipated VR port of GTA San Andreas for the Oculus Quest 2 is now “on hold indefinitely,” nearly three years after its initial announcement.

The VR adaptation of GTA San Andreas was first revealed in late 2021, generating significant excitement within the gaming community. However, since the announcement, there have been no updates on the project’s progress. According to Meta, the VR mode had been in development for several years prior to this decision.

In a recent statement to IGN, Meta confirmed that the project has been suspended without a specific timeline for resumption. A Meta spokesperson also addressed the situation in the comments section of Skydance’s recent announcement for Behemoth on YouTube. “GTA: San Andreas is on hold indefinitely while we both focus on other projects. We look forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future,” the spokesperson commented, marking a casual but disappointing revelation about the fate of the VR mode.

Meta’s foray into VR ports began with the release of the original Resident Evil 4 for Oculus devices, preceding Capcom’s own ambitious remake of the game. Rockstar Games has previously ventured into VR with LA Noire: The VR Case Files, initially launched on HTC platforms in 2017 before making its way to Meta and PS VR.

While LA Noire: The VR Case Files appears to have been an internal project at Rockstar, the specifics regarding the development of the San Andreas VR version remain unclear. Fans are left waiting for further updates as Meta shifts its focus to other initiatives.
