In a notable update for the newly launched Google Pixel 9 series, a feature dubbed “Adaptive Touch” is now enhancing user experience by improving touch responsiveness in challenging conditions, such as when fingers or the screen are wet. Although Google did not highlight this functionality during their launch event, tech enthusiasts quickly uncovered this useful addition.
Located under Display settings in the phone’s menu, specifically at Display > Touch sensitivity, Adaptive Touch automatically adjusts the device’s touch sensitivity based on the user’s environment, including the presence of a screen protector. This feature, which was rumored earlier in the year, has been confirmed to be active on the Pixel 9 and demonstrates its effectiveness particularly well when dealing with wet fingers.
Comparative tests between the Pixel 9 with Adaptive Touch and the older Pixel 8 Pro reveal a significant performance gap. The Pixel 9 offers smooth scrolling even with wet fingers, whereas the Pixel 8 Pro exhibits noticeable jumps and stutters.
While initial results are promising, the impact of different types of screen protectors on Adaptive Touch remains inconclusive. Personal testing showed some issues with a tempered glass screen protector when using the fingerprint reader. However, re-registering fingerprints after applying the screen protector resulted in improved functionality, suggesting that Adaptive Touch enhances sensitivity once fingerprints are re-enrolled.
Notably, Adaptive Touch is enabled by default on the Pixel 9, requiring no manual activation from users. Despite its automatic activation, users retain the option to disable it if preferred.
This innovative feature significantly boosts the Pixel 9’s usability across various scenarios, from rainy weather to sweaty hands. Complemented by the series’ debut of an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, Adaptive Touch marks a valuable enhancement for users seeking reliable performance in all conditions.
