In a significant update, Google Tasks has undergone a major redesign, further refining the app’s interface for Android users. Following its initial Material You update in February 2023, the app now introduces a sleek, card-based layout and eliminates the previously used bottom app bar.
Previously, Google Tasks utilized a bottom app bar, a feature carried over from Material 2 and updated to align with Material You. This bar provided navigation and key actions, including a floating action button (FAB) for creating new tasks, a list switcher, sorting options, and an overflow menu accessed via sheets.
With today’s redesign, the bottom app bar has been removed, leaving only the FAB visible for task creation. The new interface centers around a card motif, with active tasks displayed prominently at the top and a separate card for completed tasks. Sorting options and additional functions like renaming and deleting tasks are now accessible from the top-right corner of the screen.
The updated cards feature a darker background in dark theme mode, aligning with the tasks.google.com UI introduced in November. This design shift aims to enhance usability and visual consistency across Google’s task management ecosystem.
This redesign is part of a server-side update associated with Google Tasks version 2024.08.05.x for Android. Users who do not see the changes immediately may need to force stop the app from the App info settings. Notably, this update is not yet available for iOS users.
