Gmail users on Android devices now have the ability to interact with Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, directly within the Gmail app. This new feature, known as Gmail Q&A, was officially launched on Thursday for subscribers of Gemini, with plans to extend it to iOS devices in the near future.
The Gmail Q&A feature allows users to engage Gemini as a personal assistant capable of navigating and summarizing their entire email inbox. For instance, users can request Gemini to provide summaries of specific emails by saying, “Catch me up on the emails about quarterly planning,” or seek detailed information such as, “How much did the company spend on the last marketing event?”
Despite its capabilities, users should be aware of potential inaccuracies, as AI models like Gemini occasionally produce incorrect or misleading information.
Previously, users relied on the search bar at the top of Gmail to find information. While this search function remains available, a new Gemini button will now be positioned next to the search bar. This update reflects Google’s broader strategy to shift from traditional search methods to AI-driven chat interactions. Although Gemini will provide summarized responses, it will also cite the original source email.
Subscribers can access this feature by tapping the black star icon, representing Gemini, located in the top-right corner of the app. Currently, Gmail Q&A is limited to email-related queries, but Google plans to integrate it with users’ Drive files in the future.
The rollout of Gmail Q&A began in June for web users who subscribe to Gemini or Google One AI Premium, costing approximately $20 per month. This initiative forms part of Google’s strategy to offer advanced AI features while generating revenue through premium subscriptions.
As of now, it is unlikely that Gmail Q&A will be available to free Gmail users. Google is leveraging features like this to justify the subscription costs for Gemini and enhance its suite of products, including Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Calendar.
