Neko Health, the body-scanning startup co-founded by Spotify’s Daniel Ek and Hjalmar Nilsonne, is making waves in the UK as it opens its first clinic outside Sweden. Known for its innovative approach to preventative healthcare, Neko Health offers comprehensive body scans and AI-powered insights designed to detect conditions such as heart disease and skin cancer before they become serious issues.
The Swedish startup’s London launch marks a significant step in its mission to transform health diagnostics. For £299, clients undergo a series of advanced scans and tests that generate millions of data points to assess their health across various metrics, including cardiovascular and metabolic conditions. Each session includes a personal consultation with a doctor to discuss the results. Interested individuals can register for appointments on the company’s website.
Following a successful debut in Stockholm, where Neko Health has established two clinics and performed over 2,700 scans, the company is expanding its reach. Of those scanned, 78.5% were found to be healthy, while 14.1% had conditions requiring further medical attention. Alarmingly, 1% were identified with severe conditions, such as cardiovascular issues or cancer, all of whom were previously unaware of their health status.
The name “Neko,” which means “cat” in Japanese, symbolizes the company’s hope to offer users multiple “lucky breaks” or opportunities for improved health, much like a cat’s reputed nine lives.
Despite its high-profile backer, Neko Health maintains a minimalist approach. The London clinic’s discreet location and understated design sometimes make it easy to overlook. The clinic’s entrance, marked only by a simple logo, leads to a sleek, spa-like interior characterized by muted colors and calming music. The health assessment process begins with a detailed body scan conducted in a cylindrical chamber equipped with 70 sensors, capturing 50 million data points. This is followed by additional scans, eye and blood pressure measurements, and a blood sample.
The focus of Neko Health is on proactive risk management and early detection rather than addressing existing conditions. The data collected is analyzed to highlight potential health risks, such as skin cancer, high blood pressure, and metabolic syndrome, with referrals for further diagnostics if needed.
The origins of Neko Health are as unconventional as its approach. Nilsonne recounts that Ek initially reached out via Twitter in 2018. At the time, Nilsonne’s AI-driven energy monitoring startup was struggling, leading to a pivotal conversation that would eventually spark the creation of Neko Health.
With its blend of cutting-edge technology and preventative care, Neko Health is poised to make a significant impact on how we approach health and wellness.
