As Apple’s annual September event approaches, anticipation is building around the new announcements that will shape the tech giant’s lineup for the coming year. Historically, this event has been a stage for unveiling the latest iPhones and Apple Watches, with other major updates typically reserved for later in the year. This year promises similar patterns, but with a few intriguing additions to the agenda.
iPhone 16 and 16 Pro: Evolution, Not Revolution
Apple’s iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models are expected to continue the trend of incremental updates rather than groundbreaking changes. The design overhaul that once characterized Apple’s flagship phones has largely settled into a pattern of gradual refinements since the iPhone X’s radical redesign in 2017.
The new iPhone 16 and 16 Pro are likely to feature a “Capture” button on all models, allowing users to take photos without using the touchscreen. This new button will replace the Action button introduced on last year’s iPhone 15 Pro, adding versatility to its functionality. Additionally, the iPhone 16 will see a shift in its rear camera arrangement from a diagonal to a vertical alignment, and the Pro models will sport slightly larger screens—6.3 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max—achieved through a reduction in bezel size.
Inside, both models are anticipated to benefit from an improved thermal design and faster 5G modems. The Pro models will also feature new panels offering enhanced brightness, while camera upgrades include better ultra-wide lenses and a new 5x zoom telephoto lens for the smaller Pro.
Apple Watch Series X, Ultra, and SE: Subtle Changes Expected
The evolution of the Apple Watch has been relatively slow in recent years, with incremental updates and new health features being the primary focus. This year, however, may bring more significant changes. The upcoming Apple Watch Series 10 or Series X is rumored to introduce a larger, 49 mm screen and a slimmer design. Additionally, new tracking features such as sleep apnea monitoring could enhance its health tracking capabilities.
Improvements to the Apple Watch Ultra and SE models are also expected, though specific details remain unclear. A new, faster chip is likely to be a part of the updates across all models.
AirPods and AirPods Max: Anticipated Refreshes
Rumors suggest that Apple will refresh its baseline AirPods with shorter stems and improved noise cancellation. These new AirPods are expected to charge via USB-C, aligning with the shift towards this universal standard.
There is also speculation about updates to the AirPods Max, which have not seen major changes since their introduction four years ago. If updated, the over-ear headphones are likely to adopt USB-C and incorporate features from the latest AirPods Pro, such as advanced noise cancellation modes.
Potential iPad Mini Update
Although it seems more fitting for an October event, there is speculation that a new iPad Mini could make an appearance in September. The rumor stems from reports of dwindling supply for the current iPad Mini, but this remains uncertain.
iOS 18 Release and New Features
The new iPhone launch is expected to coincide with the release of iOS 18, which will bring a host of small improvements. The most anticipated feature, Apple Intelligence, will debut in iOS 18.1 later in the year. During the event, Apple will likely highlight these new features, with the “It’s Glowtime” tagline possibly referring to the colorful animations associated with these updates.
As Apple gears up for its September event, these anticipated announcements will likely set the stage for the company’s technology landscape for the year ahead.
