YouTube, owned by Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL.O), announced on Thursday the termination of the Tenet Media channel, along with four other channels operated by its owner, Lauren Chen. The move follows an indictment from the U.S. Department of Justice that implicated the company in an election-related influence scheme.
The Justice Department filed charges on Wednesday against two employees of the Russian state media network RT, accusing them of running a money-laundering operation. According to officials, the scheme involved using an American company to produce online content aimed at influencing the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The indictment claims the employees funneled $10 million through shell companies and fake personas to an unnamed Tennessee-based firm, tasked with producing divisive political content.
Although the indictment does not explicitly name the company, court documents strongly suggest that Nashville-based Tenet Media, which has posted nearly 2,000 videos to YouTube within the past year, is the firm in question.
Tenet Media has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the shutdown of its channel.
