Apple has unveiled its latest flagship smartphones, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, during a livestream event today. The new models boast several key upgrades, including larger screens and enhanced camera capabilities.
The iPhone 16 Pro now features a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max offers a more expansive 6.9-inch screen. These upgrades are primarily due to the slimmer borders surrounding the displays, which offer a more immersive viewing experience.
Continuing its trend of premium materials, Apple has incorporated a new titanium chassis for the iPhone 16 Pro. This updated design not only provides a more refined texture but also enhances heat management. Apple claims this new design results in up to 20 percent faster sustained performance compared to its predecessor.
Battery life improvements have also been highlighted, though Apple did not specify exact figures. The enhancements are attributed to both larger batteries and efficiency upgrades.
A major highlight of the iPhone 16 Pro is the introduction of the A18 Pro chip, a step up from the standard A18 found in the regular iPhone 16. The A18 Pro features a 16-core Neural Engine and offers 17 percent increased memory bandwidth. This chip is designed to run Apple Intelligence features up to 15 percent faster than previous Pro models. It includes a 6-core GPU that delivers 20 percent better performance, with a notable boost in ray tracing capabilities—twice as fast as the previous A17 Pro. The A18 Pro’s 6-core CPU, consisting of two performance cores and four efficiency cores, is 15 percent faster or 20 percent more efficient compared to the A17 Pro, promising enhanced battery life and reduced heat generation. The chip also features a new video encoder and image signal processor (ISP) that offer twice the data throughput, improving video capture quality.
The iPhone 16 Pro introduces a new Capture button, which allows users to quickly take photos akin to a traditional camera. This button is touch-sensitive, enabling users to adjust settings such as zoom by swiping across it.
In terms of camera upgrades, the iPhone 16 Pro maintains its triple-camera setup: wide-angle, telephoto, and ultra-wide. Notably, it now includes a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera for greater detail in close-ups and selfies, alongside a new 48-megapixel wide-angle sensor that processes data twice as fast. Additionally, the 5x telephoto lens, previously exclusive to the 15 Pro Max, is now available on both sizes of the iPhone 16 Pro.
A standout feature is the ability to capture 4K video at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision, a first for the iPhone lineup. Users can adjust playback speed between 120 fps, 60 fps, 30 fps, and 24 fps within the Photos app. The new models also support spatial audio and a feature called Audio Mix, which allows for voice and sound isolation in different mix styles.
The iPhone 16 Pro is priced starting at $999 for the 128GB model, with the iPhone 16 Pro Max beginning at $1,199 for the same storage capacity. Both models are available for pre-order this Friday and will start shipping on September 20.
