Apple Reveals Latest AirPods Model with Significant Upgrades
During its latest “It’s Glowtime” event, Apple introduced the fourth-generation AirPods, a significant update that brings Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and several new features. Priced at $179 for the ANC model, the AirPods 4 are set to hit the market on September 20, with pre-orders available starting today.
Redesign and Advanced Technology
The new AirPods 4 showcase a redesigned form factor, marking a departure from their predecessors. Apple has utilized advanced technologies including 3D photogrammetry and laser topography to design these earbuds, resulting in a shape that Apple claims provides a better fit. The updated model features shorter stems and a design that resembles the AirPods Pro, though it lacks the silicone tips. The new force sensor on the stems allows users to control media playback and manage calls with a simple press.
Enhanced Performance with H2 Chip
The AirPods 4 are powered by Apple’s new H2 chip, which offers improved performance over the previous H1 chip. Apple asserts that the H2 chip delivers up to twice the noise cancellation capabilities compared to its predecessor. Enhanced microphones and computational audio technology further support the active noise cancellation feature.
Incorporation of AirPods Pro Features
In addition to ANC, the AirPods 4 inherit several features from the AirPods Pro. These include personalized spatial audio with head tracking, machine learning-powered voice isolation, and the ability to automatically lower volume when engaging in conversation. The new Transparency mode allows users to hear ambient sounds while listening to media, and Adaptive Audio blends Transparency mode with ANC based on the environment.
New Acoustic Architecture and Charging Case
Apple has also introduced a new acoustic architecture for the AirPods 4, promising richer bass and clearer highs. The redesigned charging case is 10 percent smaller and features a shift from the proprietary Lightning port to USB-C, complying with European Union regulations. The case supports up to 30 hours of battery life and wireless charging, including Qi.
Updates to AirPods Pro and Max
While no new versions of the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max were announced, Apple is rolling out updates to enhance the current models. The AirPods Pro will receive a software update this fall that includes a “clinical-grade hearing aid” feature for users with mild to moderate hearing loss. The update will also introduce a Hearing Protection feature to reduce loud environmental sounds, an improved “multiband high dynamic range algorithm” for earplug functionality, and a hearing test feature.
With these updates, Apple continues to advance its AirPods lineup, offering enhanced functionality and performance for a diverse range of users.
