The GSMA, a global association representing mobile network operators (MNOs), has launched the first-ever Responsible AI (RAI) Maturity Roadmap for the telecom sector. The framework, backed by 19 leading mobile operators, aims to help telecom companies adopt ethical and responsible approaches to artificial intelligence (AI) while tapping into a $680 billion market potential over the next two decades.
Developed in collaboration with McKinsey, the roadmap is supported by major industry players such as BT Group, Vodafone, Telefonica, Orange, Singtel, and Deutsche Telekom. It offers comprehensive guidelines to ensure responsible AI implementation, aligning with global AI regulations and ethical standards set by organizations like the OECD and UNESCO.
Addressing the $680 Billion Market Opportunity
McKinsey estimates that expanding AI use in telecom could generate as much as $680 billion over the next 15 to 20 years. The GSMA’s initiative marks the first time an entire industry has committed to a unified, responsible AI framework to harness this opportunity while mitigating risks.
The RAI Maturity Roadmap allows telecom companies to assess their current AI capabilities and identify areas for improvement. It provides structured guidance on advancing AI responsibly, offering tools to measure progress and promote best practices in AI governance.
According to the GSMA, this roadmap is informed by extensive consultation with industry leaders and aligns with internationally recognized ethical guidelines to ensure AI benefits are realized responsibly across the sector.
