Apple’s Latest Update Introduces Flexible Home Screen Customization and Icon Placement
With the public release of iOS 18 this week, Apple is making waves by introducing a major overhaul to its home screen customization and app icon placement. This update, which arrives alongside a revamped Control Center, marks the most significant change to the iPhone’s home screen experience in years.
Enhanced Customization Options for Home and Lock Screens
To access the new customization features, users will still need to long-press in the open space between icons on any home screen page to enter “wiggle mode.” Historically, this mode allowed users to move apps or add widgets by tapping the “+” button. In iOS 18, however, the “+” button has been replaced by an “Edit” button.
Tapping “Edit” reveals a drop-down menu with three new options: Add Widget, Customize, and Edit Pages. The “Add Widget” function remains largely unchanged, while “Edit Pages” lets users manage which home screen pages are visible during swipes. This option mirrors the previous method of tapping the dots at the bottom of the home screen.
The new “Customize” feature introduces a panel that was not present in iOS 17. Located at the lower third of the screen, this panel allows users to switch between Light and Dark modes, and adjust icon sizes from small to large. It also includes four icons: Light, Dark, Automatic, and Tinted.
Innovative Tinted Icons and Color Picker
The “Light” and “Dark” settings adjust Apple’s built-in icons—and any third-party app icons that support them—between different color schemes. The “Automatic” option switches based on the system-wide Light or Dark mode.
The standout feature is “Tinted,” which applies a uniform color to all icons on the screen. This option resembles the previous ability to match icons with home screen wallpaper but offers a more striking and uniform look. Users can even use a color picker to match icon hues with their wallpaper.
While this uniform color splash may not appeal to everyone, it adds a cohesive visual element to the home screen.
New Flexibility in Icon Placement
Perhaps the most anticipated update is the enhanced flexibility in icon placement. The updated wiggle mode now allows users to place app icons freely on the screen, akin to customization options on Android or Windows desktops.
This improvement addresses previous frustrations with wiggle mode, which many found chaotic and inefficient. With the new system, users can organize their home screens with greater precision and avoid the pitfalls of accidentally creating folders or misplacing icons.
Overall, iOS 18’s home screen features represent a significant step forward in user customization, offering flexibility and personalization that have long been requested by iPhone users.
