Russian Propaganda Group Behind False Kamala Harris Hit-and-Run Story, Microsoft Reveals

Microsoft Identifies Disinformation Campaign Targeting U.S. Political Figures

Microsoft has uncovered a disinformation campaign linked to a covert Russian propaganda group responsible for spreading a false story about Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The misleading claim alleges that Harris caused a hit-and-run accident in San Francisco in 2011, leaving a 13-year-old girl paralyzed.

According to Microsoft’s recent findings, the fabricated story was propagated through a video featuring a paid actor posing as the victim, and disseminated via a bogus news website named “KBSF-TV,” which does not actually exist. The research attributes this operation to Storm-1516, a Kremlin-aligned troll farm known for its involvement in digital disinformation.

The campaign’s sophisticated tactics included the creation of realistic-looking content and leveraging social media to amplify the false narrative. This revelation underscores the ongoing challenges posed by state-sponsored disinformation efforts aimed at manipulating public perception and influencing political discourse in the U.S.
