Sony Celebrates 30 Years of PlayStation with Limited-Edition Gray PS5 and PS5 Pro

In a nod to its storied past, Sony has announced limited-edition versions of the PS5 and PS5 Pro to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original PlayStation, which launched in Japan on December 3, 1994. These new models feature retro gray plastic shells and multicolored PlayStation logos reminiscent of the classic design.

Set to be released on November 21, the consoles will be available for preorder starting September 26 through Sony’s official website, direct.playstation.com. Alongside the consoles, Sony is introducing gray DualSense and DualSense Edge controllers adorned with vibrant PS logo buttons, as well as a gray variant of the PlayStation Portal streaming device.

The limited-edition PS5 Pro will be restricted to 12,300 units, a tribute to the original launch date. However, Sony has not disclosed specific production numbers for the regular PS5, the DualSense controllers, or the PlayStation Portal.

Each console bundle will come equipped with several themed accessories, including a PS logo sticker, a PS logo paperclip, cable ties, and a unique USB-C cable featuring a nostalgic PS1-style controller connector.

While these consoles celebrate the legacy of the PlayStation, it is worth noting that neither model includes a built-in optical drive. However, buyers will have the option to purchase an $80 optical drive separately.

As of now, Sony has not revealed pricing details for the limited-edition consoles or their accompanying accessories. Nevertheless, given the collectible nature of such releases, it is anticipated that both enthusiasts and scalpers will quickly acquire them, regardless of the listed prices.

In 2014, Sony released a similar PS1-inspired PlayStation 4 for the console’s 20th anniversary, which remains a sought-after collectible today, often fetching between $1,000 and $2,000 on resale markets.
