Tech giant Microsoft announced on Tuesday a significant investment of $1.3 billion aimed at enhancing its cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure in Mexico over the next three years.
At an event in Mexico City, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella emphasized the company’s commitment, stating, “We’re doubling down on bringing more capacity to Mexico.”
This substantial investment will focus on improving connectivity and facilitating the adoption of AI technologies among small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Microsoft’s initiative is projected to impact approximately 5 million Mexicans and support around 30,000 SMBs within the three-year timeframe.
Several Mexican companies, including prominent breadmaker Bimbo and cement producer Cemex, are already leveraging Microsoft’s AI tools.
In addition to its AI endeavors, Microsoft has partnered with communications firm Viasat to extend internet access to over 150,000 Mexicans who previously lacked cellular connectivity, with plans to achieve this by the end of 2025.
Incoming Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard expressed optimism about the investment on X, stating, “This is great news for our country,” and highlighting that it will help Mexico rapidly enhance its AI capabilities.
