The aftermath of Hurricane Milton has sparked a surge of misinformation regarding relief efforts in Florida, with conspiracy theories circulating about government control over weather patterns. Although the storm’s impact was less severe than anticipated, the fallout from Hurricane Helene, which struck two weeks prior, still lingers in various states.
In response to this misinformation, at least three Republican lawmakers have publicly denounced conspiracy theories being circulated within their party. Meanwhile, social media has been flooded with AI-generated content depicting false images of damage and amplifying political messages in the lead-up to the November 5 election.
“This manipulation of public perception and its real-world effects is significant,” said Henry Ajder, an independent advisor on generative AI. “Social media narratives alleging that Democrats control the weather or that FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is failing, fueled by AI-generated images, are creating a toxic atmosphere. This complicates the work of officials operating under challenging conditions.”
Key Misinformation Claims
Claim: Images show flooded Disney World in Orlando.
What We Know:
AI-generated images circulated online with misleading captions claiming to depict devastation at the theme park. An analysis by TrueMedia.org, an online deepfake detection platform, found “substantial evidence of manipulation” in these images, which were likely created using the AI tool Stable Diffusion.
Digital forensics expert Hany Farid from the University of California, Berkeley, stated that their models identified these images as AI-generated. “These three images are not high-quality AI-generated visuals,” he noted, pointing out structural inconsistencies, including uneven reflections in the water.
“The spread of such content muddles the waters as officials work to save lives and casts doubt on legitimate information. This poisoning of the information ecosystem poses a grave threat to our society and democracy,” Farid added.
As misinformation continues to circulate, it underscores the urgent need for accurate information during crisis situations.
