At Tesla’s We Robot event held Thursday at Warner Bros. studio in Burbank, California, humanoid robots captivated attendees by serving drinks and mingling with guests. The event showcased the ambitious vision of Elon Musk, who predicts that the company’s latest creation, the Optimus robot, could revolutionize household automation.
Musk described Optimus as potentially “the biggest product ever of any kind,” emphasizing that Tesla’s advancements in automotive technology apply equally to robotics. “The future should look like the future,” he remarked. “Everything we’ve developed for our cars can be adapted to a humanoid robot, which is essentially a robot with arms and legs instead of wheels.”
While Musk acknowledged significant progress in the development of Optimus, he did not provide a definitive timeline for its release. In April, he hinted that the robot could be ready for production by 2025, with a “good chance” of initial units becoming available by the end of this year.
“We started with someone in a robot suit and have made dramatic advancements year after year,” Musk explained. “If you extrapolate this, you’re really going to have something spectacular—something anyone could own. You could have your own personal R2-D2 or C-3PO.”
Looking ahead, Musk estimated that Optimus could be priced between $20,000 and $30,000, significantly lower than the cost of an average car, making it accessible for many households. “It will do anything you want,” he stated. “It can be a teacher, babysit your kids, walk your dog, mow your lawn, do your groceries—whatever you can think of, it will do.”
Musk expressed his belief that the demand for Optimus could be immense, suggesting, “I think this will be the greatest product ever of any kind because I think every one of the 8 billion people on Earth will want their own Optimus buddy—maybe two.”
During the event, guests experienced the capabilities of humanoid robots firsthand. Musk encouraged attendees to interact with the robots, stating, “We’re going to show tonight that Optimus is not a canned video. It’s not walled off. The Optimus robots will walk among you. Please be nice to the Optimus robots. You will be able to walk right up to them; they’ll serve drinks at the bar. It’s a wild experience just to have a humanoid robot there in front of you.”
