The head of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), Teodoro Valente, emphasized the crucial role of private investment in the space sector during a press briefing ahead of the International Astronautical Congress in Milan. He stated that while private companies are vital for the industry’s growth, their involvement should not be stigmatized but rather guided by appropriate regulations.
In comments to Reuters, Valente expressed that the exponential growth projected for the space economy is largely unattainable without significant participation from private entities. “We must not demonize the arrival of private companies in the sector,” he asserted.
However, Valente highlighted the necessity for clear legislative frameworks that delineate roles and responsibilities, ensuring the long-term sustainability of space operations. He pointed to Italy’s recently introduced framework legislation for the space sector as a model for addressing various solvable issues that arise from private involvement in space activities. The International Astronautical Congress is set to commence on October 14.
