Meta Platforms’ Facebook and Instagram services have largely returned to normal following a significant outage that impacted thousands of users across the United States on Monday. Outage tracking website Downdetector.com reported that at its peak, over 12,000 users experienced issues with Facebook, while more than 5,000 reported problems with Instagram around 1:35 p.m. ET.
As of 2:09 p.m. ET, the number of ongoing issues had dropped significantly, with approximately 450 users still reporting problems with Instagram and 659 with Facebook, according to Downdetector, which aggregates status reports from multiple sources. It is important to note that the figures from Downdetector are based on user-submitted reports, meaning the actual number of affected users could vary.
Meta Platforms has not yet responded to requests for comment from Reuters regarding the outage. Earlier this year, a similar outage affected hundreds of thousands of users worldwide for more than two hours due to a technical issue, generating over 550,000 disruption reports for Facebook and approximately 92,000 for Instagram at the height of that incident.
