Meta’s Oversight Board Seeks Public Input on Hate Speech Policies

Meta‘s Oversight Board has called for public comments regarding the moderation of immigration-related content that may negatively impact immigrants. On Thursday, the board shared two specific cases where Facebook moderators opted to keep potentially harmful posts on the platform.

The board aims to evaluate whether Meta’s current policy, which offers protection only to refugees, migrants, immigrants, and asylum seekers against severe hate speech, is sufficient. Funded by Meta, the Oversight Board operates independently and can issue non-binding recommendations based on public feedback.

One case involves a Facebook page belonging to a Polish far-right coalition that posted a meme in May containing a derogatory term for Black individuals in Poland. This post garnered over 150,000 views, was shared more than 400 times, and attracted over 250 comments, with 15 users reporting it for hate speech. Despite this, the post remained on the platform following a human review by Meta.

In another instance, a German Facebook page shared an image in June depicting a blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman making a “stop” gesture, accompanied by text suggesting that Germany no longer needed any more “gang rape specialists.” Meta also decided to retain this post after a human review.

After the Oversight Board raised concerns, Meta’s policy experts reassessed both cases and upheld their original decisions. “These symbolic cases from Germany and Poland will help us determine whether Meta should be doing more and whether it is doing enough to prioritize this critical issue that matters to so many around the world,” said board co-chair and former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.
