Worldcoin, the cryptocurrency initiative co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, announced on Thursday a rebranding to World Network as it intensifies efforts to scan human irises with its specialized “orb” devices.
The primary offering of World Network is its World ID, described as a “digital passport” that verifies the holder’s humanity and distinguishes them from AI chatbots online.
During an event in San Francisco, the company unveiled an updated version of its orb iris-scanning device, now featuring 5G connectivity alongside enhanced privacy and security measures. To improve accessibility, World Network introduced new strategies, including dedicated retail locations and a collaboration with the Latin American delivery service Rappi to distribute orbs to a wider audience.
To obtain a World ID, users must undergo an in-person iris scan with the orb, which resembles a silver bowling ball. Once the scan confirms the individual’s identity as a human, a World ID is generated. In select countries, participants are incentivized with WLD, a cryptocurrency token.
The initiative is managed by Tools for Humanity, based in San Francisco and Erlangen, Germany. Since its launch in July 2023, over 6.9 million individuals have registered for iris scanning.
However, the project faces scrutiny regarding its data collection practices, with privacy advocates raising concerns about the handling of personal information. Earlier this year, temporary bans were issued in Spain and Portugal, while Argentina and Britain announced investigations into World Network’s operations.
