OpenAI has launched Sora Turbo, a new version of its text-to-video generation model, available to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. This tool allows users to generate videos up to 20 seconds long at 1080p resolution from text or image prompts. The model will be accessible in the U.S. and other regions, excluding Europe due to regulatory restrictions.
“We’ve developed a faster version of Sora, and today we’re releasing it as a standalone product for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers,” said OpenAI in a statement.
ChatGPT Plus users, at $20 per month, can create up to 50 videos monthly, while Pro users, paying $200 a month, have unlimited access, albeit with slower generation speeds for some videos and up to 500 faster-rendered videos.
Sora Turbo allows video creation from text, still images, and existing video clips. The model includes a “Storyboard” feature, helping users plan video sequences, and a video feed to explore creations from other users. OpenAI aims to compete with tech giants like Google and Meta, who also offer AI-powered video tools.
Despite improvements, Sora Turbo still faces challenges, including unrealistic animations and poor physics in some cases. OpenAI acknowledged these issues, noting that the technology is still in development.
To address deepfake concerns, OpenAI has integrated C2PA metadata for content verification and introduced an internal tool to verify Sora-generated videos. The release also includes a System Card detailing the model’s technical and safety features.
Sora Turbo is part of OpenAI’s ongoing series of product updates, with a new ChatGPT Pro plan offering enhanced AI capabilities for $200 a month.
