Meta has rolled out the v72 update for its Quest headset, introducing several significant upgrades, including improved hand tracking, a more seamless way to connect to Windows 11 PCs, and enhanced virtual keyboard support. The update is being released gradually, so certain features may not be available to all users immediately.
One of the standout features of this update is the ability to quickly connect to a paired PC using the Quest’s Remote Desktop feature. Users can now pair their headset to a PC simply by looking at the PC and tapping the “Connect” button that appears above the virtual keyboard. This feature functions similarly to the connection process on Apple’s Vision Pro, but requires the Mixed Reality Link app to be installed on the PC. It is compatible with Windows 11 version 22H2 and newer.
The v72 update also introduces a broader keyboard tracking system. Now, any nearby physical keyboard can be detected and displayed through a passthrough “window” while users are in virtual environments. This feature, inspired by the Vision Pro, expands on the Quest’s existing capability—introduced in 2021—that displays a virtual version of the user’s keyboard. Previously, this functionality was limited to specific keyboard models.
Additionally, Meta has improved hand tracking in Quest v72, making the hand cursor more stable for tasks like navigating menus, pinching to select items, and dragging windows. The update also includes a new “hand ray visualization” feature, which makes it easier to target objects within virtual spaces, especially in confined areas.
Other notable additions in the update include live captions for calls in the People app, as well as the introduction of direct messaging within the Instagram app. Meta has also launched a new Media Gallery app, which allows users to view images, videos (including spatial content), and screenshots.
The Quest v72 update is expected to further refine the virtual reality experience for Quest users, enhancing both productivity and immersion.
