OpenAI has responded to Elon Musk’s lawsuit, claiming he originally pushed for a for-profit model and sought to take full control of the company. In a court filing on Friday, OpenAI presented emails revealing that Musk had proposed a for-profit division and tried to lead the organization himself. This move adds to the ongoing feud between Musk and OpenAI, which Musk co-founded in 2015.
Musk’s lawsuit seeks to block OpenAI from shifting from its nonprofit status to a more traditional corporate structure. OpenAI argues this change is necessary to secure the investments needed for its ambitious AI projects. The filing also highlights Musk’s attempts in 2017 to create a separate for-profit entity, Open Artificial Intelligence Technologies, Inc., with himself in charge.
The emails also reveal Musk’s push for total control over the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which raised concerns within OpenAI. Co-founder Ilya Sutskever warned that Musk’s terms would give him “absolute control,” something Musk had publicly downplayed. OpenAI contends that Musk’s lawsuit is more about rivalry than organizational structure, particularly given his leadership of xAI, a competitor to OpenAI.
The legal battle continues as both sides vie for control over the future of AI, with Musk’s role in OpenAI’s history now under intense scrutiny.
