OpenAI has introduced a new phone number for ChatGPT, enabling users to interact with the AI chatbot via phone calls and WhatsApp. The feature, announced on Wednesday, offers a new way to access the generative artificial intelligence, with voice calls available in Canada and the United States. International users can still engage with ChatGPT by saving the phone number on WhatsApp and sending text messages to interact with the chatbot.
The new number, 1-800-ChatGPT (+1-800-242-8478), is a vanity number designed to be easy to remember. It’s toll-free for users in the U.S. and Canada, meaning they won’t incur any charges for the calls. However, there is a limit of 15 minutes of voice call time per month, although OpenAI has indicated that these limits could change in the future based on user demand and feedback.
For those outside of Canada and the U.S., the service is still accessible through WhatsApp, where users can send text messages to interact with ChatGPT. However, WhatsApp access is currently limited to text-only interactions, and features like voice commands, image generation through DALL-E, and Canvas are not available.
OpenAI also highlighted that the voice call feature works on both smartphones and feature phones, expanding access to people who may not have advanced mobile devices. This marks a significant move toward making ChatGPT more accessible to a wider audience, particularly in areas where smartphones may not be as common. While the service is still in its early stages, OpenAI plans to adjust the feature as needed, with possible changes to availability and functionality in the future.
