Google has announced a new feature that enables the migration of Microsoft Teams messages to Google Chat. Starting this week, Google Workspace admins can now transfer conversations from Microsoft Teams channels to Google Chat spaces.
To initiate the migration, admins must use a dedicated console provided by Google. The process begins with connecting the admin’s Microsoft account to the migration tool. Next, they must upload a CSV file listing the teams from which they wish to migrate messages. This file also includes a mapping of email IDs from the source (Microsoft Teams) to the target (Google Chat). Admins will then set a starting date for the migration, specifying from which point in time they want messages to be transferred. Once everything is set, the migration process begins, and the selected data is moved from Teams into Google Chat spaces.
After the migration is complete, the newly transferred spaces, messages, and conversations will be available to Google Workspace users. However, only users with a valid Google user license and the Google Chat service activated can receive the migrated data.
It’s worth noting that the migration tool will not alter or delete any existing Google Chat spaces or messages. Additionally, admins can perform a delta migration, which allows for the transfer of any new messages added to Microsoft Teams channels since the primary migration, ensuring that previously migrated content is not duplicated.
Once the migration is finished, admins can generate a report that provides detailed information on any content that was skipped, failed, or flagged with warnings during the process. This feature provides organizations with an easier way to transition communication history from Microsoft Teams to Google Chat without disrupting existing data.
