Meta‘s Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, recently shared a year-end message about the company’s AR/VR future, calling 2025 “the most important year in the history of Reality Labs.” He acknowledged that while Meta currently leads the space, rising competition from companies like Apple and Google could threaten its position.
Bosworth emphasized the stakes, telling his team, “If we slip, we potentially lose our leadership position.” He noted that competitors like Apple’s Vision Pro headset and Google’s Android XR are entering the market after Meta paved the way. “The competition always has an easier time than the leaders,” Bosworth said, acknowledging that rivals benefit from Meta’s early innovations.
In addition to larger competitors, Bosworth is closely watching knockoffs of Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, particularly from China. However, he remains confident in Meta’s position, pointing to successes like the growth of Horizon Worlds, which is now among the top three most-used apps on the Quest 3 headset.
Meta is also focusing on expanding Quest headsets for work applications, an area where Apple and Samsung are also targeting. Bosworth believes Meta is well-positioned to compete and is collaborating with third-party device makers like Lenovo and Asus to expand the reach of its Horizon OS.
With a busy year ahead, Bosworth is determined to maintain Meta’s lead. “We created these categories… and now, even though they are coming for us, I want to stay in the front,” he said.
