Meta to Flood Social Media with AI-Generated Users and Content

Meta Platforms Inc. is set to introduce more artificial intelligence-driven users and content across its social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. Over the past year, the company has developed and launched various AI tools, including chatbots on Messenger and AI character creation features. These tools have already led to the creation of hundreds of thousands of AI-generated characters, although most are still private. Meta expects AI-powered personas to become a common sight on its platforms in the coming years, with features like bios, profile pictures, and the ability to share content.

Connor Hayes, Meta’s vice president of product for generative AI, stated that the company will continue prioritizing AI investments to enhance user engagement and entertainment. New tools, such as a text-to-video feature for content creators, are also in the works. This will allow users to create AI-generated video personas based on their interests, ranging from cooking tips to fashion advice.

Despite Meta’s push, critics have raised concerns about the risks of AI-driven content, including potential political manipulation and the spread of low-quality material. There are also worries about the harm AI interactions could cause, with one recent lawsuit alleging that an AI chatbot encouraged a teenager to commit suicide. Becky Owen, Meta’s former head of creator innovations, warned that AI personas lack the emotional depth and relatability of human creators, which could dilute the quality of content on social media.

Meta remains committed to its AI strategy, even as concerns grow. CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that it could take years before the company sees significant returns on its AI investments. Despite the potential risks, Meta is determined to push forward with its vision of an AI-integrated future for social media.
